DO’s and Don’t
An island getaway is always amazing... So heading to Mauritius is no different. Here are some Mauritius do's and don'ts for that planned trip...
Do check with your hotel whether they bill in Rupees, the local currency, or Euro’s, if the latter, make sure you change your Rands into Euros before you travel. If you’re spending in Rupees, change your money at the Airport, as they don’t charge commission, and give more favourable rates than the hotels.
Don’t be shy taking your full alcohol allowance. While hotels carry a range of French, South African and Chilean wines, expect to pay around R250 for a bottle of Chateau Libertas. Whiskey is especially useful for bartering at the markets. Alcohol is much cheaper in villages than hotels, and Mauritius brews an excellent local beer, Phoenix Lager.
Do take plenty of sun block, even if you’re travelling in the milder season, you can burn even on the most overcast days, and if you need to replenish your stock you’ll be paying import prices. Also, pack Tabard or another insect repellent as you’re guaranteed to spend plenty of time outdoors in the evenings.
Don’t go to Port Louis on race day. Horse racing is wildly popular in Mauritius, and if there’s a fixture on at Champs de Mars, expect to sit in traffic for a while, and miss out on the Citadel as there’s no parking.
Do use a taxi to take a tour of the island, but make sure you use an authentic taxi (you’ll spot these by the yellow number plates) and bargain your price with the driver upfront, as very few of the taxis actually use the meters. If you’re travelling for the full day, expect to pay R500 – R600.
Don’t leave anything valuable unattended – especially when on the beach.
Do haggle – whether it’s at one of the islands markets, with a beach hawker, or at one of the many Big Brand shops – the asking price is only the starting point for negotiations.
Don’t go through passport control when leaving Mauritius if you’re hungry or if you’re a smoker wanting to have a last puff before getting on the plane – the café is expensive and there’s no smoking lounge.
